Who builds it
Yamane Industries is led by Akihiko Yamane, its CEO and creative director, who has spent years in denim manufacturing. His view of denim is simple: it gets better the more you wear it. In his words:
The more denim products are worn and used, the more enjoyable they become as they fade with age, and they are also durable and long-lasting.
The brand treats Japanese denim as one of Japan's world-class industries, and its aim is to keep that alive by putting good denim into everyday use rather than into a collector's drawer. The motto on the label says the rest: "Make the world smile with denim." That sounds light, but it sets the whole approach. The denim is built to be worn hard and enjoyed, and the range runs well beyond jeans so more people can find a way in.
The denim
Yamane's jeans are made the slow way, on old shuttle looms that weave the cloth slowly and leave an uneven, characterful texture you do not get from modern fabric. The denim is 14.5oz and dyed a greenish indigo, a deep blue with a green cast that fades with age.
There are two ways to buy it. The NO.1 cuts are rigid: raw, unsanforized heritage denim that shrinks about two sizes and moulds to you as you wear it, with a black or yellow selvage ID at the outseam. The NO.2 cuts are sanforized: pre-shrunk, so they shrink only about one size and hold their shape, with the red selvage, the "Aka-mimi", that denim people look for. The fits are vintage. The classic straight runs a touch loose in the thigh and sits high in the rise, and there is a regular tapered if you want a cleaner leg.
Why the fade is the point
The whole brand is built around what happens after you buy. Rigid, unsanforized denim shrinks down and shapes itself to how you sit, walk and carry. The greenish indigo and the old-loom texture mean the fades come in with character rather than flat. Akihiko Yamane's line about denim getting more enjoyable as it ages is not a slogan, it is the reason the rigid cuts exist at all. If you want the full effect, start with a NO.1 and wear it in.
More than jeans
Yamane turns the same denim into a proper run of bags and goods, not gimmicks. The huge 29-inch tote carries nine pockets and a loop to hang a jacket, and there are smaller boat-shaped and round-bottom totes alongside it, all in 100% cotton denim. Add a long denim stole and a small jeans-shaped charm, and the line on the label makes sense. Denim is not only for jeans.
