Graph Zero is an Okayama denim brand that makes its own cloth from the yarn up. It started in 2004 in Kojima, the home of Japanese denim, as a fabric store, and grew into a fully in-house operation: it designs the fabric, dyes it, sews the garment and sells it, all under one roof. That control is the whole point, and it shows most in the dyeing.
Where it comes from
Graph Zero began in Kojima in 2004 as a fabric store, then brought every step in-house, from making the textile to designing, sewing and selling the finished piece. Working from the ground up like that is rare, even in Kojima. It lets the brand do things most denim labels buy in, the dyeing and the weaving in particular, and it keeps the whole process in one set of hands. The look leans on 1940s wartime workwear, the five-pocket jeans and field jackets of that era, rebuilt with Graph Zero's own fabric and details.
The dyeing
The signature is how Graph Zero colours the denim. Its main method is kasezome, or skein dyeing, where the yarn is dyed in loose, twisted bundles at low tension so the indigo soaks into the core of each thread instead of just coating the surface. On the skein-dyed jeans the warp is dyed in a green indigo, which gives the cloth a green cast from the very first wear, and the dyeing is deliberately uneven, so the colour has depth and fades with character. Beyond indigo, the brand also dyes by hand with natural indigo, called aizome, and with kakishibu, a tannin from unripe persimmons that turns a warm brown. Dyeing your own yarn this way is slow and unusual, which is the point.
The weave
The cloth is woven as carefully as it is dyed. Graph Zero weaves slowly at very low tension, which keeps the yarn relaxed and the surface alive, and it leans on textured yarns: a heavy slub run through both the warp and the weft on some fabrics, nep on others, plus a 16oz herringbone and 15oz selvedge. The result is denim with real surface, not the flat, even cloth most jeans are cut from.
The workwear
The cuts are vintage workwear, rebuilt on Graph Zero's own fabric, with the details right rather than workwear-flavoured fashion. The jeans run from slim skein-dyed straights to heritage fits based on 1940s five-pockets. The denim jackets bring back older construction, including the T-back yoke on the Type II and Type III. The Seabees overalls copy a 1940s U.S. Navy construction-battalion suit, here in slub denim printed with M81 woodland camo and hung from X-back webbing straps. The railman pants go back further, to early-1900s railroad work trousers, with a high rise, a relaxed wide leg, a hammer loop, buttons for suspenders instead of belt loops, and a cinch-back.

How it wears, and who it is for
This is selvedge denim made to be worn in, and the dyeing is the reason to buy it. The skein-dyed green indigo and the natural-dye pieces fade in a way you do not get from surface-dyed denim, and even the camo on the Seabees overalls softens with use. It suits anyone who cares as much about how denim is dyed and woven as how it fits, and the workwear jackets and overalls are a good way in if you already have jeans you like.
